Robotics Sprint tackles pipe inspection challenges in Denmark

The purpose of this case was to foster innovation and collaboration in robotics and automation by addressing a real-world challenge faced by Thy Forsyning. Through the Robotics Innovation Sprint we aimed to develop an automated solutions for inspecting and maintaining over 1,000 km of wastewater pipes in northern Denmark.

By bringing together industry leaders and experts from six companies – Graspian, PartDesign, METR, SICK, PAJ-Group, and Bionic System Solutions – the initiative encouraged co-innovation to identify and develop new technologies capable of detecting pipe damage, leaks, deformities, and rodent infestations.

The broader goal was not only to solve Thy Forsyning’s challenges but also to create solutions that could benefit other utility companies in Denmark.

The result of the sprint

Modular robot designed to navigate the toughest challenges

The two-day sprint led to the design of a unique, purpose-built robotic inspection system for wastewater pipelines. This robot was specifically engineered to navigate through pipes, including twisted sections, making it far more effective than traditional inspection methods.

The robot was equipped with advanced sensor technology, enabling it to detect temperature variations, which are strong indicators of leaks. Additionally, its modular design allows for interchangeable components, such as camera solutions, ensuring adaptability to different inspection needs. This flexibility makes the solution scalable and suitable for other utility companies beyond Thy Forsyning.
