New technology

Danish robot specialists develop technology for localising hidden dangers in Ukraine

This initiative is a collaborative effort between Danish companies and knowledge organisations to push the boundaries of technology and contribute to global security and reconstruction efforts.

Advancing Technology to Restore Land and Lives

Danish innovation paves the way for safer and faster UXO clearance in Ukraine

The purpose of this case is to develop and implement smart robotic and sensor technology to address the critical issue of unexploded ordnance (UXO) and landmines in Ukraine. By leveraging advanced detection methods such as ground-penetrating radar and magnetometers, the DISARM project aims to make the clearance process faster, safer, and more efficient. The overarching goal is to accelerate demining efforts to enable Ukrainians to safely cultivate their land and restore mobility in affected areas.

Collaborative solution

Safer, faster, smarter demining through Innovation

The DISARM project brings together Danish technology firms, robotics experts, and research institutions to develop an autonomous robotic solution for detecting and clearing unexploded ordnances (UXOs) and landmines in Ukraine. The core solution consists of mobile robots equipped with advanced sensors, including:

  • Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) – to detect buried objects.
  • Magnetometers – to differentiate between UXOs and other metal debris.
  • Multi-sensor integration – to improve detection accuracy and minimize false positives.

By replacing manual detection methods with robotics, the project aims to accelerate demining efforts, improve safety, and reduce costs.

Promising results

Sets a new standard for landmine worldwide

Although the technology is still in its early stages, initial results have been promising. Early testing has demonstrated the successful integration of sensors, confirming the potential for improved UXO detection. The automation of the clearance process has shown significant potential to reduce human exposure to dangerous environments, and scalability studies suggest that once further refinement is completed, the solution could be deployed on a larger scale.

The impact of this initiative extends beyond technological advancements. By accelerating UXO clearance, the project plays a crucial role in restoring safety and normalcy for Ukrainians, allowing them to return to their land and resume agricultural activities. This, in turn, supports economic recovery by making large areas of previously unusable land available for farming once again. The introduction of robotics into mine clearance also greatly reduces the risk of human casualties, making the process not only more efficient but also far safer. Through this effort, the project not only addresses an urgent crisis in Ukraine but also sets a new standard for landmine and UXO clearance worldwide.
